2008 Call for Proposals

Deadline: May 31, 2008

Objectives
1. Develop innovative pre- and postgraduate education-related programs.

2. Provide pilot projects designed to lead to extramural funding.

The Program
Funding will be made available from the School of Medicine to support innovative projects designed to improve medical education.  It is anticipated that grants of up to $10,000 will be awarded this year. The funding period begins July 1, 2008 and ends on June 30, 2009.

Successful applicants will be eligible to apply for a second grant during the next academic year, pending availability of funds and evidence of progress.  Faculty who commit 80% of their time to medical school activities are eligible to apply (regardless of their university appointment.)

Review Criteria
A broad range of projects will be considered including those related to: team-based learning, the informal curriculum, enhancing and assessing the competency curriculum, CurrMIT and Angel enhancement, standardized patients, student affairs, mentoring, advising, improving student/faculty relations, communication and other projects related to the educational mission of IUSM. The review process will consider:

  • Applicability to required curriculum for pre- and postdoctoral trainees.
  • Originality
  • System-wide applicability
  • Prospects for future extramural funding

Applications
Applications must be submitted electronically (form attached) with the following sections: 

  1. Specific Aims
  2. Significance
  3. Project Plan
  4. Budget
Sections 1-3 must not exceed a total of three single-spaced pages.  In addition, a budget and NIH format biographical sketches (two pages) of professional personnel working on the grant and a budget must be provided.  The budget must fit a single page and be organized by the categories of salaries, supplies, and equipment (including justification). No faculty salaries are allowable. The Dean’s Office for Medical Education and Curricular Affairs reserves the right to retain at the conclusion of approved project any expendable computer equipment (laptops, desktops, LCD projectors, etc.) purchased with ER&D funds.

Review Process
The Executive Associate Dean for Educational Affairs at the Indiana University School of Medicine will appoint reviewers.  Applications should be sent via e-mail to meca@iupui.edu and must be received by May 31, 2008.

Progress Reports
An interim progress report will be due December 31, 2008.  A final 12-month report will be due August 1, 2009, containing the results obtained and a summary of how funds were expended.
