Core
Curriculum
In
an effort to allow medical students around the state access
to the discipline-specific learning objectives and to facilitate
assessment of Competency III, Using Science to Guide Diagnosis,
Management, Therapeutics, and Prevention, MECA has requested
a copy of the "80% core" curriculum from IUSM course
directors statewide.
The
"80% core" is the core information each discipline
has agreed to present to all students across the state. It
is expected that course directors will devote at least 80%
of their course time to this core material. The remaining
20% of the course time is devoted to topics chosen at the
discretion of individual course directors.
By
presenting a document with each discipline's learning objectives,
students will be able to better prepare for statewide exams
and STEP 1 board exams. IUSM will also be able to demonstrate
the consistency of medical education across the state to the
Liaison Committee for Medical Education (LCME).
Below
is the listing of the core curriculum received to date. This
page will be updated as additional information on other courses
becomes available.
For
more information regarding Competency III, Using Science to
Guide Diagnosis, Management, Therapeutics, and Prevention,
please contact Virginia
Thurston, Ph.D., Competency Director.
*Biochemistry
core curriculum is presented at the various statewide centers
based on the academic calendar year. CMB Molecular Biology
is included in the Biochemistry core curriculum at the South
Bend, Northwest, Terre Haute, Fort Wayne, Evansville, and
Muncie Centers. For Indianapolis, Bloomington and Lafayette,
the CMB component is taught in the fall.
